Few seaside resorts on England's east coast grew as quickly as Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, which became a holiday town after a railway reached it in the early 1880s. This view shows the cliffs and beach that drew visitors, printed in photochrom, a Swiss process that produced soft, painted-looking colors from photographs. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America, and this one comes from its 1905 catalog of English scenes, which gave American buyers a colored glimpse of the British coast.
