Beach Gardens at Gorleston, on the Norfolk coast beside Great Yarmouth, was a seaside pleasure ground where holidaymakers strolled, sat, and watched the sea during the late Victorian resort boom. This print was made by the photochrom process, a multistage color lithographic method that the Swiss firm Photoglob Zürich developed in the 1890s and that the Detroit Publishing Company later sold in America. Its colors were added by hand on stone plates, so the greens of the lawns and the soft blues of the sky were chosen by the printer rather than recorded by the camera.
