Overstrand is a village on the north Norfolk coast, where low cliffs give way to a broad beach of sand and shingle, and this view shows the shoreline that drew holidaymakers there in the late nineteenth century. The photochrom process behind the print was a Swiss method that combined a photograph with several hand-prepared stone lithograph layers to produce bright color. Detroit Publishing Co. offered such views to American buyers, and this one appeared in its 1905 catalog of English scenes, though the original image was made in the 1890s, when seaside resorts along the Norfolk coast were growing in popularity.
