Great Yarmouth, on the Norfolk coast where the River Yare meets the North Sea, was a busy Victorian seaside resort, and this view turns to its beach gardens and jetty, where visitors came to stroll and take the sea air. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. in its 1905 catalog of English views. Its exact date is uncertain, but it likely dates from between about 1890 and 1900, when rail travel was carrying growing numbers of holidaymakers to the coast.
