Exmouth is a seaside town at the mouth of the Exe estuary on the Devon coast, and this photochrom captures its beach in the years when such resorts were becoming fashionable destinations for English families. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, was a early form of color reproduction that used multiple stone lithographic plates to build up hand-tinted looking images, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold these views in bound catalogues. Its catalog entry, from a 1905 listing of English views, places the photograph's original making roughly in the 1890s, a period when railways had made coastal holidays easier for ordinary visitors.
