Falmouth sits on the south coast of Cornwall, where a sheltered harbor on the Carrick Roads drew ships for centuries and, by the late 1800s, holidaymakers as well. This view of its beach dates from roughly the 1890s, a period when rail links made seaside towns like Falmouth easier to reach for visitors from across England. The picture is a photochrom, a color process in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to stone and inked in several passes, and the Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in the United States. Its catalog listing from 1905 shows how these English scenes were marketed to American buyers as glimpses of distant places.
