Swanage, a seaside town on the Dorset coast, was a small village of stonecutters and fishermen until the railway reached it in 1885 and turned its sandy bay into a holiday resort. This photochrom print shows the beach in the years when Victorian visitors were arriving in growing numbers. Photochrom was a color process that built up an image from several stone plates, giving scenes soft, painterly tones. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held the American rights to the process, sold these English views to American buyers and listed this one in its 1905 catalog.
