Teignmouth is a seaside town on the Devon coast, and this view shows its beach as Victorian holidaymakers knew it. The railway reached the town in the 1840s, and by the late 1800s it had become a popular resort for visitors from inland cities. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in the 1890s, and it was published in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Co. Its catalog entry, Print no. 10511 in the company's 1905 catalog J, places it among the firm's English views.
