Dawlish, on the south Devon coast, is the subject here, and this photochrom shows boats drawn up on its shingle beach with the town's seafront behind them. Photochrom was a color process that the Detroit Publishing Company used to reproduce photographs for picture postcards and bound albums, and this print is listed in its 1905 catalog of English views. The process was prized for its soft, painterly tones, which suit a seaside scene of pale sand, water, and sky. The image was likely made in the 1890s, when Dawlish was a popular resort on the English Channel coast.
