Chesil Beach is a long bank of shingle that runs for roughly 18 miles along the Dorset coast, joining the mainland to the Isle of Portland. The pebbles are known for grading in size from west to east, a feature that made the beach a subject of local interest. This photochrom print was made in the 1890s by a process developed in Switzerland, which produced color images by hand-registering several lithographic stones from a single photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company later issued these views in the United States, and this example appears in its 1905 catalog of English scenes.
