Pictured here is the beach at Blackpool's North Pier, the Lancashire seaside resort that drew large crowds of holidaymakers from the mid-19th century. The pier opened in 1863 and was among the town's main attractions when this view was taken. The image is a photochrom, a early color process that used multiple stone lithographic plates, and it was published by the Detroit Publishing Co. under license from Swiss makers. The company's catalog of English views, issued in 1905, sold such images to American buyers, so this print shows how Victorian England looked to an audience across the Atlantic.
