Looking east along the shingle and sands of Worthing, this view captures a Sussex seaside town on the English Channel coast during the 1890s, when the resort was growing in popularity with visitors. The picture is a photochrom, a early color process that produced vivid prints from hand-prepared stones, and this example was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose catalog of England views (catalog J, 1905) listed it as print no. 11341. Its bright tones and open beach make it a useful record of how English seaside leisure looked at the turn of the century.
