Folkestone's seafront on the Kent coast of southeastern England, with its beach and pier running out toward the English Channel, is the subject here. The print uses the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photographs with multiple lithographic color stones, and the Detroit Publishing Co. sold views like this one in its 1905 catalog, where it is listed as number 10311. By the late 1800s Folkestone had grown into a popular seaside resort, helped by rail links to London, so the scene reflects the leisure travel of the Victorian and Edwardian era. The soft, layered colors are typical of the process.
