The pier and sands at Penarth, a seaside town on the Bristol Channel just south of Cardiff, are the focus here, with the pale water and the pier stretching out from the shore. Penarth developed as a Victorian resort in the late 1800s, when rail links and the nearby Cardiff docks brought steady numbers of day-trippers to its promenade and beach. The photochrom process used to make this print was a Swiss method that colored black-and-white negatives by hand-registered stone lithography, producing soft, saturated tones. Detroit Publishing Co. later sold these views in the United States, and this copy comes from its 1905 catalog, which offers a useful snapshot of how British coastal towns were presented to American buyers.
