Long piers capped with arcaded pavilions were a hallmark of seaside resorts from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, when railways brought city families to the coast for summer outings. In this wide panoramic view, the crowded sands and the pier stretching out over the water show how central these structures were to leisure life. The warm sepia tone was typical of early photographic printing and picture postcards, which gives the scene a nostalgic softness. The arcades and the rows of onlookers reward a slow look.
