A long wooden pier runs out over the water in this panoramic view, its deck dotted with onlookers while a crowd fills the sand below. Panoramic beach photographs like this one were popular in the early twentieth century, when seaside resorts drew large day-trip crowds by rail and streetcar and photographers used wide-format cameras to capture the full stretch of a shoreline. The pier itself was a social center as much as a place to fish or stroll, lined with bathers, families, and visitors who came to see and be seen. Look closely at the edges of the frame to notice the clothing and bathing costumes, which show how beach fashion changed over the decades.
