The record gives only a title, so I'll focus on what the scene itself shows. A long pier running out from the shoreline dominates this panoramic view, with a row of waterfront buildings lining the edge of the harbor behind it. Piers like this were the working spines of many American and European port towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s, where ships loaded cargo, ferries docked, and passengers came ashore. Panoramic views were a popular way to record such busy waterfronts, since they captured the full length of the shore and its activity in one wide frame.
