From the pier at Worthing, this view takes in the beach and the stretch of the English Channel coast in West Sussex. By the later nineteenth century Worthing had grown into a fashionable seaside resort, and its pier, opened in 1862, gave strollers and day-trippers a place to walk out over the water. The print is a photochrom, a Swiss process that built up color from several lithographic stones laid over a photographic base. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photochroms in the United States, listed this view in its 1905 catalog of English scenes.
