Margate, the seaside resort on the Kent coast, drew Victorian holidaymakers for its sands and bathing machines, and this print preserves one of its separate bathing places reserved for women. Photochrom was a color process that the Detroit Publishing Company used to turn photographs into printed views, and this example comes from its 1905 catalog of English scenes. Bathing areas divided by sex were a common feature of British resorts of the period, shaped by modesty norms that governed who could be seen in the water. The print gives a good sense of how these beaches looked to a traveler in the 1890s.
