The record names this view Shell Beach at Morthoe, a small village on the north coast of Devon, England, where shells and rock ledges mark the shoreline at low tide. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that built color from several lithographic stones, each worked by hand to match the tones of a photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, issued this view in its 1905 catalog of English scenes, reflecting the late Victorian taste for coastal travel views that people could send home or hang on a wall.
