Babbacombe Beach lies on a small bay just north of Torquay, on the Devon coast of southwest England, where red sandstone cliffs drop to a narrow shingle shore. The picture was made as a photochrom, an early color process that combined a photograph with several hand-prepared stone plates, and it appears in a 1905 Detroit Publishing Co. catalog of English views. By then Torquay had grown into a popular seaside resort, helped by the railway that reached the town in 1859, and such views were sold to American buyers who had never seen the coast themselves.
