Babbacombe Beach lies on the red-cliffed Devon coast within the seaside resort of Torquay, a place Victorian visitors came to for its mild climate and sheltered bays. This view comes from the Photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed several colored inks from a single black-and-white negative, giving the scene a soft, hand-tinted look. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, issued these views in its catalogues, and this example is listed in its 1905 catalog of England scenes. Its survival in that series is a useful reminder of how popular travel imagery of British seaside towns was in the early 1900s.
