Point Carmel stands at the far edge of the view, a headland that gives this beach scene its name and its sense of distance. Carmel-by-the-Sea grew up on the Monterey Peninsula in California as an artists' and writers' colony around the turn of the twentieth century, and its shoreline drew painters and photographers who came for the light and the open coast. Notice how the sand and the receding headland are arranged to lead the eye outward, a compositional habit common to the coastal scenes of that era. The picture reflects a time when a quiet stretch of California sand was itself a subject worth recording.
