Waikiki Beach in Honolulu is the setting here, shown in a long panoramic format that takes in the shoreline and the boats drawn up or drifting offshore. The print is a platinum print, a process prized for its soft tonal range and fine detail, and it was registered for copyright by Will Cowdell King on October 17, 1902. By then Waikiki was changing from a stretch of Hawaiian fishing and surfing ground into a destination for visitors, a shift that the hotels and tourist trade of the early 1900s would deepen. The wide frame makes it a useful record of how the shore looked during that transition.
