Fourth Avenue Beach in Asbury Park, New Jersey, is captured here in a wide panoramic format, roughly 10 by 30 inches, printed on silver printing-out paper around 1902. The photograph was submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office by B. J. Falk in July 1902, which helps explain why a print of this kind survived. Asbury Park was founded in 1871 as a Methodist-associated seaside resort, and by the early 1900s its oceanfront drew large summer crowds. The long format suits a shoreline scene, showing how the beach and boardwalk life stretched along the coast.
