Coney Island's crowded shoreline in 1906 is the setting for this stereograph, a paired image meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so that the beach seems to open up in three dimensions. The card was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is noted on its record, and it came into the Library of Congress through the collection of Marian S. Carson. By the early 1900s Coney Island, on the southern edge of Brooklyn, had become a major seaside resort, drawing large crowds to its bathing beaches, and swimming there was turning into a popular mass pastime. The card preserves that moment of shared leisure on the sand.
