Coney Island's beach is the focus here, shown as the stereograph's title puts it: a summer playground for the city's crowds. Photographer William H. Rau made this view in 1903 for the stereo card market, where cards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. Coney Island on the southern tip of Brooklyn was among the most popular seaside resorts for New Yorkers in the early 1900s, reached by trolley and elevated train, and its packed sands captured the scale of working-class leisure in the growing city. Rau is known for documenting these resort scenes, so the card offers a snapshot of how the crowds gathered there at the turn of the century.
