A new pier reaching out over the Atlantic is the centerpiece of this 1905 stereograph of Wildwood, New Jersey. Cards like this one, numbered 4388 and associated with collector Marian S. Carson, were designed for a stereoscope, a viewer that fused two side-by-side photographs into a single image with apparent depth. Wildwood was one of the Jersey Shore resorts that drew summer visitors by rail in the early 1900s, and piers and broad beaches were the main attractions. The card shows how those seaside amusements were promoted to a national audience.
