Coney Island, the seaside amusement district at the southern tip of Brooklyn, is the subject named in this glass negative's record, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its accompanying card, and that information was never independently verified. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work made by a news photo service that operated in New York from the early 1900s and sold images to newspapers. Coney Island was then among the most popular leisure destinations in the country, drawing crowds by rail and trolley to its beaches, boardwalk, and rides. The record gives no exact date, so the image is best understood within that broader period.
