Coney Island's bathing beach in 1896 is the setting for this stereograph, a paired-image card meant to be viewed through a hand stereoscope. The card's title points to the shadows cast across the sand, and its subject is a group of Black women and girls at the shore, a scene the record describes as social life among African Americans in New York. Stereo cards like this were mass-produced and sold widely in the 1890s, so they tell us as much about how urban leisure was pictured for middle-class parlors as about the beach itself. The card was registered for copyright, and the collector Marian S. Carson later preserved it.
