The title promises a South Seas escape, and this stereograph card delivers one in the middle of Florida: a sandy beach fronted by thatched huts, dated 1926 and set in Coral Gables. George Merrick's planned community was then at the height of the Florida land boom, when developers used exotic themes and imagery to sell a lifestyle as much as property. Stereograph cards like this one were made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave flat photographs a sense of depth and made distant places feel close. The card's copyright notice and collector's name also show how such images circulated as keepsakes and promotional views.
