Few places in 1926 Florida promised a South Seas escape as directly as Tahiti Beach, a man-made stretch of sand in Coral Gables with thatched huts and footbridges set among the palms. Coral Gables was the planned city developer George Merrick had laid out since the early 1920s, and its builders often used exotic themes to draw visitors during the state's land boom. This stereograph card, made to be viewed through a paired-lens viewer, shows how the scene was staged as a postcard-like fantasy of the tropics. Its small details, from the rustic huts to the arched bridges, show how the designers meant the place to feel like an island far from the Miami heat.
