Long Beach, California, is the subject here, and this panoramic gelatin silver print stretches nearly six feet wide, a format that suited the long, flat line of the beachfront and its boardwalk. The Haines Photo Co. of Conneaut, Ohio, registered the image for copyright in May 1908, which is why the Library of Congress holds a deposit copy. Around that time Long Beach was growing into a seaside resort south of Los Angeles, with a pier and boardwalk drawing summer visitors by rail and streetcar. Panoramas like this one were popular souvenirs, and they still show how the shoreline was built up.
