This photograph shows a naval fleet anchored off Long Beach, California, in 1908, the year the United States Navy's battle fleet made a long Pacific tour that drew crowds to coastal cities. The ships were painted white for that voyage, earning the group the name "Great White Fleet," and their arrival gave Southern California a rare display of American naval power. Such visits were major civic events, bringing thousands of spectators to the shoreline to watch the warships at anchor. The view across the water captures how closely the young city's waterfront was tied to naval travel and national pride at the time.
