Royal Poinciana, Palm Beach, Florida, 1912: the great wooden hotel stood on the shore of Lake Worth, where Henry Flagler had built it after bringing his Florida East Coast Railway south to the barrier island in 1894. By 1912 the resort was the center of Palm Beach's winter season, drawing wealthy visitors from the Northern states who arrived by train and stayed for months at a time. The town was still young, having incorporated only in 1911, and its economy rested on hotel service, construction, and the railroad that carried guests and supplies across the lake. Flagler's rail line reached Key West in January 1912, so residents of the hotel town could already see their railroad extending the region's reach southward through the Keys.
