Royal Palm, as this 1912 view of the Florida coast shows, took its name from the Royal Palm Hotel, the luxury resort Henry Flagler built in Miami in 1897. Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway had reached Miami in 1896, and the town grew quickly from a small settlement on the Miami River into a winter tourist destination. Its economy depended on railroad travel, real estate sales, and visitors from the North who came to escape cold weather. Citizens of the period knew the hotel as the grandest address in town, and its grounds, gardens, and palm-lined walks drew guests and local residents alike. The decade also brought civic growth, including new streets and bridges, though much of the surrounding land remained undeveloped.
