Miami in 1921 was a young city of roughly 30,000 people, having grown quickly since Henry Flagler's railroad reached the Biscayne Bay shore in 1896. Its economy rested on real estate, tourism, and winter visitors who arrived by train from the North, and the first stirrings of the Florida land boom were already drawing buyers and speculators to the coast. Local residents knew the town as a frontier settlement that had gone from pine scrub and palm hammock to a incorporated city in about a generation. This panoramic view of the palm-lined waterfront, photographed by W. A. Fishbaugh, shows the tropical landscape that city boosters were selling to the rest of the country. The boom that would peak around 1925 was still ahead, and the city's growth was about to accelerate.
