Miami, Florida, in September 1926 was a city still reeling from its land boom, and the Great Miami Hurricane struck on September 18. Henry Flagler's railroad had reached the town in 1896, and during the 1920s tens of thousands of newcomers arrived, many buying lots on speculation. Winds and storm surge from Biscayne Bay damaged hotels, homes and new construction along the waterfront, and deaths across South Florida numbered in the hundreds, with far worse flooding around Lake Okeechobee. The storm helped puncture the real estate market that had driven the city's expansion, so the damaged waterfront pictured here came to mark a turning point for the community.
