Miami in 1925 sat at the height of the Florida land boom, when lots changed hands several times a day and sales offices lined the streets of downtown. Developer George Merrick was building Coral Gables, a planned Mediterranean-style community south of the city, and the boom drew crowds of prospective buyers from northern states. Causeways across Biscayne Bay were making the barrier islands easier to reach, and the Venetian Causeway linking Miami to Miami Beach had recently opened. Few residents then guessed how quickly the boom would collapse, since the speculative fever was still running strong. What people in the city knew it for was an opportunity: fortunes were being made and lost on paper while the city's population and building permits kept climbing.
