Miami in 1921 was a young city, barely two decades past its incorporation in 1896, and it was riding the Florida land boom that had pulled in buyers, builders, and speculators from across the country. Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway had reached the Miami River in 1896, and the city's growth depended heavily on that rail line and on the winter tourist trade it brought south. Real estate offices, hotels, and new subdivisions were multiplying along Biscayne Bay, even as the boom was beginning to lose steam by the early 1920s. Residents of the period knew the town as a fast-growing resort and agricultural shipping point, where citrus, vegetables, and tropical produce moved out by rail and boat.
