Miami Beach in 1930 was a young resort city, incorporated only in 1915 and built largely on land reclaimed from mangrove swamp and bay bottom. The Florida land boom of the 1920s had drawn investors, hotel builders and new residents to the Atlantic barrier island, and the 1926 hurricane had already wrecked many of the early developments, though construction resumed quickly. By 1930 the city was still growing, with hotels, apartment blocks and the Collins Canal, which had linked the island to the mainland, shaping its streets and waterfront. The Great Depression was beginning to slow building and tourism across the state, and the island's winter season of visitors, bathers and seasonal wealth remained its main livelihood.
