Granville is a port town on the Normandy coast, and this view sets its old upper town, perched on a granite headland, against the beach below. The print was made with the photochrom process, which used a series of lithographic stones to build up full color from a photograph. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American buyers as travel souvenirs and catalogued them by number, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog. Notice how the photochrom method gives the sea and the stone walls their soft, saturated tones.
