Paramé, a seaside resort on the Brittany coast beside the walled port of Saint-Malo, is the place named in this view of its beach. Through the late nineteenth century, towns like it grew fashionable as sea bathing spread among middle- and upper-class visitors, and bathing machines and strollers were common sights on such sands. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, printed black-and-white photographs from stone plates and added hand-prepared color, giving scenes like this one a soft, painted look. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States, and this view appears in its 1905 catalog of French sites.
