A river winds past a bridge, with mountains rising behind it, in this watercolor of Jamaica, a British colony in the Caribbean in the early 1800s. The artist combined pencil, brown ink and watercolor, a layered method typical of drawings made to record a place and then finished in color. Views like this gave viewers in Britain and elsewhere a glimpse of the island's landscape, at a time when its economy depended heavily on plantation agriculture and enslaved labor. Note how the bridge and hills anchor the composition.
