Rather than a battlefield or a camp, this watercolor shows a night view of Sumner's Upper Bridge over the Chickahominy River in Virginia, with the moon lighting the water and the crossing. The river ran through the country east of Richmond, and in 1862 it lay along the route of the Union army's Peninsula Campaign, when both armies fought in the swampy bottomlands nearby. Works from that year often recorded the landscape of the fighting, and this quiet, moonlit scene offers a view of the same ground in a far calmer mood than the war reports suggest.
