Drawn by F. Palmer and published by Nathaniel Currier around 1847, this lithograph shows a ferry boat, a subject that spoke directly to daily life in New York. Palmer became one of the most prolific artists for Currier's firm, sketching designs that were transferred to stone and printed in large numbers as inexpensive popular pictures. Ferries carried people, horses, and goods across the harbor and nearby rivers, so many buyers would have recognized the scene at once. Images like this record a time when water crossings were central to city travel, before bridges and tunnels reshaped the region.
