Flatboatmen were the crews who floated cargo such as grain, pork, and whiskey down the Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri rivers to New Orleans. Their flatboats could not be rowed or poled back upstream, so the men usually sold the boat and cargo at the end of the trip and returned home on foot or by steamboat. That made the trade both hard and cheerful, and it gave rise to its reputation for rough camaraderie. Mid-19th-century painters and printmakers often romanticized these river workers as emblems of frontier independence, though the work was dangerous and seasonal.
