Looking down the Mississippi from the bluffs of Indian Mound Park in St. Paul, this view takes in the river's broad curves below the high ground that gave the park its name. The mounds for which it was named were built by earlier Native peoples of the region, and the park's overlook became a popular stop for visitors touring the city. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that Detroit Photographic Co. used to make color views of American landscapes. Its soft, saturated tones were meant to resemble hand-painted scenes, which helped make such prints popular souvenirs around 1900.
