At Greenfields ranch, a drop in the Kern Island canal shows how builders managed the steep fall of water between the river and the fields below. Carleton Watkins made the photograph around 1888, when ditches drawing from the Kern River were turning the dry land of Kern County into irrigated farmland. Watkins was best known for his large landscape views, and this numbered print records a working structure rather than scenery, with the drop slowing the current so it could be carried safely across the flat ground. Canals like this one were central to the valley's agricultural growth.
