The White House on the Pamunkey River was a plantation landing that had belonged to the family of Mary Custis Lee, and the Union army made it a major supply depot during the Civil War. In 1864, as Ulysses S. Grant pushed toward Richmond, steamboats like those in this watercolor carried troops, horses, and provisions up the river to the landing and onward by rail. Artist McIlvaine's view, which echoes an earlier sketch of the same scene from 1862, shows how the river became a working supply line for the Union cause.
